  1. David, I'm with you, unfortunately. I'm also disappointed in the weak response from Texas leaders...and this includes most local as well as State. Worse is the lack of common sense on the part of ordinary Texans. If the great majority had managed to rub two brain cells together, not only would this State be open and functioning, we wouldn't be having this discussion about the Nats. We'd be looking forward to a great time in San Marcos. Instead, a high percentage of Texans have demonstrated that they're at least one brain cell short of the number needed to rub together. And before anyone says anything, you have no idea how much it pains me to make these comments about Texas. I was born in Tennessee and got to Texas as soon as I could. I'm a Southerner thru and thru and I expect better of Texans.

  2. Why is there no response at all from either the Nats staff in Texas or from IPMS leadership? Shame on them.

  3. Nick, This is what I don’t get. It is such a small thing that can help so much and the top people on the pandemic are recommending it! I have spent 30 years working in an environment that requires safety gear. I even worked with radioactive materials. Wearing a mask is no big deal Those opposed to masks run to videos and such which show masks don’t guarantee protection and have problems if worn too long. They ignore that no one says they absolutely guarantee protection. Like all safety equipment, they only improve your odds. Dak

  4. It is unquestionable that masks reduce the spread of microorganisms that exist on the secretions of the upper respiratory system. This has been known since the early 20th century in studying the epidemiology of tuberculosis and streptococcus- related disease, amongst others. At the same time, surgeons such as myself, as well as any other person in the operating theater, were mandated to wear a mask to prevent the projection of microorganism- laden secretions into the patient’s wound. Why wouldn’t it be effective in reducing the spread of this virus? Of course masks will not stop the disease. That claim has never been made by responsible health care professionals. But in vivo experimental demonstrations have shown that the ejection of upper respiratory secretion droplets can be reduced with masks. The only way to stop it is with a vaccine or by letting everyone be exposed and either die or survive, thereby establishing “herd immunity.” As a physician, the latter is abhorrent to me. So until there is a vaccine, the best we can do is slow the pace of the spread so that hospital ICU’s will not be overwhelmed with many sick patients simultaneously. This the masks and social distancing can do. But what is really disappointing is that some of the same people who contribute to this Forum, enthusiastically welcoming new members and encouraging their modeling apparently have no compunction about refusing to do the least little thing to protect them if they were to encounter them at a Nationals by wearing a mask! Goodness people, these are, supposedly, our friends. Some of us have known each other for close to half a century. And most of us are high risk. Do you really mean you would not put on a mask, required or not, for another member’s protection on a personal point of honour? Let’s all just try to be good soldiers, arm ourselves and look out for the other guy in the foxhole with us until the war is won! Regards, Nick Filippone, M.D.

  5. The eternal optimist, I'm waiting a couple more weeks before I cancel any reservations. Personally, I blame the French. I'm sure this is all a plot by them to destroy the Texas wine industry for remarks by a Texan about the quality of French wine during WWII. They have only waited this long to put off suspicion. Dak

  6. I’ve already decided to reduce the number of my entries to one or two, if it comes off. I have come to accept the National probably won’t happen this year because the Texas government can’t get their act together to deal with a pandemic. I’m sorry to be with the negative waves like Moriarty, but I’m not seeing a good ending for this. Dak

  7. I thought there was laws against breeding in public.

  8. Considering the people that are wearing masks and wearing them wrong, I suspect it does little to no good. And the fact most people are wearing them for extended periods of time and breeding who knows what funk, we'll see how it plays out I do like the ones that look like Jesse James though... Dave

  9. Nick and David, I agree with both of you completely, so I suppose it's about time i threw in my reasoning. I am definitely in the high risk category for multiple reasons, starting with asthma combined with elements of COPD...no I've never smoked, the asthma was never properly treated for most of my life...combined with a respiratory collapse a couple or three years ago that also discovered I have severe sleep apnea and exacerbated with a cardiological birth defect known as AV Node Re-Entry Tachycardia. I make every effort to avoid contracting Covid-19 since doing so stands a high probability of killing me. Does that mean I won't be attending the Nats in San Marcos? Absolutely and you have no idea how badly I wanted to be there. My wife is also high risk, though not to the degree I am. That said, if I was hell bent on attending the Nats regardless of my medical problems, I would have absolutely no problems wearing a mask in order to protect not only myself but those around me. It is simply nothing more than pure old common sense. Given the evident resurgence of Covid-19, anyone who refuses to wear a mask at a crowded venue...except for the specific and rare situations where wearing a mask would be contradictory...needs to rethink their priorities. Finally, at the rate things are changing re: the virus, this entire thread may be moot. From where I sit, the odds are that the 2020 Nats will end up being cancelled is at least 50/50...and that's as I write this. What they will be tomorrow, never mind next week, is literally anyone's guess. If we really want to know the most accurate information, we probably need to get it straight from the horse's mouth. Ask the virus. Richard Marmo

  11. I see the top medical people in the country saying wear a mask if you are going to be in a large group. Why isn’t this enough for us to require attendees to wear masks? Why do we have to wait for the reluctant government of Texas to mandate such things? Dak

  12. Repeated tests are showing masks of any type are better than no mask in REDUCING the spread. No one says anything but distance really stops it. In a room with a couple hundred people at any given time, the temperature and humidity go up. In the vendor’s room, we will have the added effect of people touch lots of stuff. People will get closer together than they should. Throughout the world we daily rely on safety equipment. None of it is guaranteed to stop anything, but it gives you a fighting chance. We also accept many things in today’s society we would not 30 years ago. We currently worry about a child seeing a naked lady, concentration camp stuff, or a soldier peeing. But some how, asking everyone to wear a mask is a horrid violation of your civil rights. If a family comes to the show and contracts Covid19 resulting in a long hospitalization or death, IPMS could be held responsible if we do not follow CDC guidelines. We can’t guarantee no one will catch something. But we can take precautions. Simply requiring the wearing of masks is good faith start. A lot can happen in 36 days. Today,Texas hit 112,944 documented cases with 2191 fatalities, according to John Hopkins Start watching the daily spikes. Dak

  13. "Why being required to wear a mask upsets so many, ....is such an unbearable burden....I will never understand." Agreed. It's meant to protect others, in case you're infected and don't know it. To me, not wearing a mask is like purposely farting in public, only with possibly fatal consequences.

  14. These circular discussions are entertaining, but I’m waiting to see how it will be run, which depends, I’m sure, on local rules, CDC guidance, and best practices in play at the time. I’ll likely make my decision about two weeks out based on knowns at that time. I feel for the organizers, have paid my registration including the banquet, and bought a trophy package. I don’t want a refund if it cancels, just hoping it helps in some small way. If it doesn’t cancel, it’s just a choice we all have to make based on what we think the level of risk is for ourselves and others. I have my own ideas, and each person should evaluate their own risk tolerance. My profession is all about risk management, so I look at this the same way. joe

  15. Ok guys, you win. Covid19 is nothing to be concerned about. Masks don’t work so there is no point in even trying. Filter masks don’t stop you from breathing in paint fumes when you airbrush your model. Asbestos and smoking doesn’t cause cancer. Drinking alcohol doesn’t impare driving. Hard hats and safety goggles are worthless. Seatbelts and airbags have no effect. Sharks aren’t attracted to blood. Smoking at the gas pump is perfectly safe. Denial is a wonderful thing. So, when IPMS gets sued because they failed to follow CDC guidelines and several die, we can deal with that then. We’ll never be sued? We have worried about a lot less over the years. FYI, I have four nurses in my family and they will not go out without a mask these days. Dak

  16. David, Actually that data is current to yesterday, 6/21/20, they are for the entire county and I have no idea whether they are for people inside, outside, or whatever. They are the data for all of the county. Masks? I didn't say anything about that, but as a matter of fact the local judge has ordered that masks are to be worn in enclosed spaces open to the public. However, that ruling expires on 7/20/20, with the option to renew for another 30 days at that time, so we shall see. Further, your statement of 5-6% of those catching the virus and dying is misleading in that you are only including in the denominator those actually confirmed as having the virus by getting ill to the point they require treatment. It does not include the millions who may be positive (IE: they have caught it) but did not get ill and didn't seek treatment. If you were to treat the flu in the same manner (IE: only count those admitted to the hospital as the denominator) the fatality results would be the same. There is a figure out today stating that for people under 70 years old (which doesn't include me! missed that by 2 years) your chances of dying from the virus is 0.04%. As for people coming from all over the place, I should hope that if you are not well you will not come, same as with the flu, common cold, or whatever. Common sense. Otherwise I don't see this as any different than going to the local grocery store and mixing with a large group of people there. And just as in the grocery store, I'll wear a mask if it makes other people feel safer. My aim here is not to deny the virus, or tell, or encourage anyone to do anything against their wishes. I am only stating that the actual facts are there for all to see first hand without the media filter (it has been stated in one post that this is not political, but to a great extent it is!). Everyone needs to evaluate the facts for themselves and make their own decisions. I have made mine, and as I said, if the show is a go, I will be there. Having said the above, personally I do not see this virus as being particularly deadly to a person of reasonable health, without underling conditions who takes reasonable hygiene precautions as you would in flu season. Your opinion may vary hence you must make up your own mind. Those of you who believe that it is too dangerous to come then do not come, but please stop, as some have implied, labeling the rest of us as irresponsible if we disagree with your opinions. Each to his/her own.
