New to the Forum

Greetings, ladies and gents,

I'm new to the Forum and wanted to introduce myself. I'm returning to modeling after well more than 30 years away from the hobby. Last year I suffered a catastrophic injury to my left leg and after a long recuperation discovered that I needed to find a less strenuous hobby. I was an avid modeller years ago but drifted away from the hobby (cars, girls, beer, girls.....you get the idea). A few months ago I stumbled on some modeling web sites while surfing the net and it was like meeting up with an old love. It didn't take long for the flame to be rekindled. Kind of like meeting an old flame after many years and finding that the spark is still there.

I was pleasantly shocked to see how far the hobby has progressed. Back in the day it was $2.00 to $3.00 dollar kits from the five and dime (showing my age for sure). No photo-etch, after market detail kits, and of course, no internet sites or vendors where you could shop the whole world, not just the local hobby shop or department store.

I've spent the last couple of months acquiring the tools and supplies I think I need to get started again. Experience has taught me that the proper tools and equipment make anything easier, and more fun and satisfying. I have to admit that I've let myself splurge on a lot of things I couldn't afford before - even if they had existed. Now I have my tools and supplies at hand and I'm read to start my first build in many years. When I was modeling years ago my interest was in WW 2 U.S. Naval ships and I have found that hasn't changed. My first build will be the Italieri 1/35 L.C.V.P., which I hope to start this week - work and the wife permitting.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot from the folks on this forum and, if my builds make the grade, to sharing some of my builds with you. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions and I've been impressed by how willing everybody here seems to be to share tips and tricks of the trade.

So, there you have it. I'm looking forward to getting my feet wet and learning all the new techniques and how to get the most of the new developments in the hobby. And, looking forward to being a part of this great community!

Bob

I've been back in the hobby for 20+ years, after the usual early involvement in my pre-teen years.

I'm very focused on 1/32 and 1/48 WW2 aircraft, with only a few non-aircraft kits in my 200+ stash.

I've been very non-productive over the last 10 years, a situation I'm always vowing to change.
Another Forum Newbie

Hi! I'm George Shaeffer and I'm a Forum newbie. I'm also the Treasurer for the 2012 IPMS National Convention (We're Going To Disney World!). No, that's not the theme of the Convention -- we're just so excited about it that we can't stop saying that. I'm a member of the Pelikan Model Club in Clearwater, FL - Florida's oldest IPMS Chapter.

A brief bio: I started building models at about the age of six (fortunately none of those examples survived - I used LOTS of glue to make sure they stayed stuck together). I kept at it until my mid-teens, when I began to notice those fascinating creatures called "girls." I re-entered the hobby in about 2003, focusing primarily on 1/24 & 1/25 autos. I joined IPMS and Pelikan in 2009. I now build mostly 1/24 - 1/25 race cars, along with some 1/48 aircraft (mostly between-the-WWs air racers and WWI fighters) and ships and watercraft in all scales and types. I also build wooden models of ships and watercraft in all scales and types. I just picked up some inexpensive armor kits at the IPMS 2010 National Convention in Phoenix (LOVE those last day markdowns!) so that I can start learning how to build and weather armor too.

I'll be 59 in September. I live in Redington Beach, FL with my shih-tzu, Victoria. I'm in a long-term relationship (10 yrs and counting). I'm a retired CPA/CFO. I have a son, daughter-in law and two grandkids in Phoenix (I think I managed to get them hooked on modeling at the Convention). My other interests are travel, the Internet, reading, the arts, history, museums and visiting historic sites, especially those about maritime history.

But what I like to customize my collections. So buy the piece and I customize or factory, artisans. Currently, the only work 1 / 10 scale. I like the soldier of time and tell stories of his adventures in cartoons with the dioramas and videos with the figures. Scales 1 / 10, 1 / 18, 1 / 30 and 1 / 32 is what I have on my website. Figures trademarks extinct (To the memory and history of the figures) and custom figures worked by myself.
Nothing more to say ... carefully ... from Spain ....
Hi All,
This is my first forum post but I've been a member off and on since the early sixties. I wish I had my original member number! I mostly do aircraft in 1/48 and occasionally 1/32. My Dad got me started in the hobby when I was six years old. We made a Strombecker wooden Piper Cub and painted it red and yellow. It's a busy life and I work slowly. I just finished a Hasegawa P-38 for a buddy of mine that spent so many hot summers in the garage that the tail booms droop a bit. It's not exactly a contest winner but my friend and I are happy with it. I don't know if this is the right place to do it but here's a special hello to my old friend Bill McAllister in Dayton, Ohio who got me ito IPMS back at the dawn of time and to all my old buds who were IPMS Stockton Tomcats back in the mid 80s!
Best regards,
Chuck Byram

After seeing ads in modeling magazines for IPMS for the past 35 years, I have finally joined. I started plastic modeling as a kid, building all sorts of things, ships, planes, cars, etc. In my late teens I settled on WWII AFV's with a definite lean toward German tanks especially 1939-1942 early war models. I've tried my had at plank on frame shipbuilding and completed a kit of the tug SEGUIN (incl. R/C) back in 1986. At the present I would describe my self as a desultory modeler. It takes me forever nowadays to complete anything. Two years ago I built the old Italeri 155mm Howitzer, just for practice, and right now I have spent the last year off and on working on the Trumpeter KARL mortar. I finally have it painted, washed, and some initial dry-brushing done, still have a ways to go. I guess I really enjoy buying kits more than building building them!

Paul

Hello from Wisconsin.

Hello everyone. My name is Eric and I'm from southeast Wisconsin here in the U.S. Been building models since I was about 12 or 13, though the results at that early age were "miserable" as I was too eager to put kits together and play with them. But now at the age of 40, my skills have improved immensely and I've been going to contests, recently joined the Billy Mitchell model club here in Milwaukee, and finally joined the IPMS in mid May. I hope to make lots of friends here and learn lots of great modeling tips and advice.
As for what model subjects interest me, I'm mostly into Sci-fi, Modern aircraft, and Modern ships. I generally won't do anything else like cars (Too hard to get that nice smooth paint finish), Camouflage, Figures, and a few other subjects. The biggest reason why I won't model certain stuff or can't do certain model techniques is because I'm blind in my left eye, Have 20/700 sight in my right eye, and also in the early stages of getting a cataract in my right eye. So whatever model subjects I show in the future on these forums, I hope everyone can understand my shortcomings so to speak. What I lack in eyesight, I try to make up for with patience, dedication, perseverence, and just plain lots of hard work.
My biggest interest is what's known as "What If" or "Never-Were" subjects. These are the things like concepts, prototypes, or other stuff that nobody has seen or heard of before. I also like to dabble a bit in scratchbuilding and humorous stuff too.
Well, that's all I have to post for now. If anyone has any questions or wants to see some sample pics of my models, then let me know.

Paper Modeling

Hello to all modelers out there. I am a bit of a scratch builder and have enjoyed building models for a very long time. Since I found paper as a modeling medium, I have been amazed as to what can be accomplished. I have a large inventory of paper models and Later I will do a build thread as to how I built some of them. I hope that you enjoy them and see you around in the forums.

When I get a hang of uploading photos, I will upload some of my works.

New Member Bill from Delaware

Hi, my name is Bill I'm a new member from Delaware and I could use some help from the forum. I have been trying to find the plastic model of a Volkswagon that was made between 1966-1970. It was molded in Black plastic, larger than 1/24 scale, maybe 1/20,1/18 scale and of a 1966-1968? VW with the the crank handle sunroof, not the full cloth sunroof. The body had to be built by fitting the sides to the frame. Had opening doors, trunk, and engine compartment. Anyone know who made it? I was 8 or 9 years old at the time, and tried to finish it for him. I'm a little fuzzy on the year because I had just finished the original issue 1/96 scale Saturn V rocket kit. Things sagged a bit in my zeal to finish it, which unknown to me at the time, became the future fate of his 1966 VW 1300, as well as my own 52 year old body. I can't seem to find anything on the web. Maybe some old model Memories? Catalogs? Books?
My Dad will be 82 this year, and I would like him to know that I found who made this kit, as I spent many a Saturday washing and waxing his Volkswagon over this, later to become the first car I drove at 16, to my first job and best job to date, at a Hobby shop!
I worked at the shop until going in the Navy at 18,(1976-1980) and afterward while going to College. Best job, best people,(Co-workers and Customers) you could ever meet, and still keep in touch after 30 years.

TWO new forums!

I've created two new forums today to give a home to group builds and models that match a monthly theme.

The group build forum will be moderated by our one-man group builder, Mark Deliduka! Mark will help set up group builds on the forum and help with photo posts, etc.

The themed forum will be honcho'ed by Rusty White. Rusty will choose a topic every month for members to post model photos that match the theme.

I'll leave it up to Mark and Rusty to determine how their new forums will operate. I think they'll be great additions to the forum mix we already have.

Enjoy!

Dennis Tennant
IPMS Forum Administrator
forum_admin@ipmsusa.org

New Gallery

Hi Folks,

We have a new Gallery online at http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery . The Web Team have been moving the galleries from the other servers into the new space, plus we have some new Albums set up as well.

The older galleries are still online and linked from the 'Galleries' button on the main site since we're still working on the move. The new site is not setup for members to submit images - I am looking into the Forum add-on to do that, but we'll have to upgrade IP Board to version 3 first...

If you have any questions, let me know.

Eric Aitala
